Travel insurance for Russia: medical cover and policy checks

Check medical travel insurance for Russia: e-visa and regular-visa requirements, policy territory, dates, exclusions and assistance. Official sources included.

Do I need medical insurance for Russia?

For a unified e-visa, the MFA requires medical insurance valid in Russia throughout your stay, with reciprocity exceptions. For an ordinary visa application, its consular guidance requires a policy unless a treaty or applicable category exception says otherwise. This guide does not determine a personal exemption or certify a policy.

Before buying or relying on a policy

Start with your entry route. Read the policy wording alongside the checklist above, then ask the insurer to confirm Russia cover, dates, exclusions and assistance arrangements in writing. Ask the authority receiving your application about any case-specific insurance documents or amount. Keep the wording and assistance contacts available for your trip.

Russian Visa Guide does not issue quotes, select an insurer, take payment or collect traveller details on this page. You can use the checklist without submitting a request.

Use the Indian-passport visa guide for the short-visit route and the shared e-visa document checklist for application preparation. This review does not establish an India-specific insurance exemption or a required monetary amount. The insurance condition is separate from the visa's government charges.

No policy recommendation or acceptance guarantee

We explain requirements and questions to ask; we do not rank insurers or label a product universally accepted. Insurance, government charges and optional visa assistance are separate costs. Medical travel cover is not motor-liability cover. Work, study, residence and other long-stay insurance needs are outside this short-visit checklist.

Common insurance questions

The e-visa form did not ask for my policy. Am I exempt?

The MFA FAQ says omitted insurance information in the application is not itself a refusal or reprocessing ground. That concerns form data; the detailed instruction separately states the insurance condition. Do not treat omission as proof of an exemption. Last checked 26 September 2026. Official FAQ · Section 19

Is there one minimum cover amount for everyone?

We have not established one amount for every traveler from the core sources checked here. That does not mean there is no requirement for your case. Confirm any amount, currency and certificate requirement with the receiving authority before relying on a policy. Last checked 26 September 2026. Consular insurance guidance

Can I assume a policy bought outside Russia will work?

The MFA describes medical and transport services, including emergency repatriation, with financing under the insurance contract. These paragraphs do not establish one monetary minimum for every traveler. Ask the receiving authority about any required amount and the insurer about the actual cover. Last checked 26 September 2026. Consular insurance guidance

No acceptance is certified here. The MFA describes Russian insurer or service arrangements for cover provided by a foreign insurer. Ask your insurer who arranges and finances care in Russia and check the receiving authority's applicable requirements. Last checked 26 September 2026. Consular guidance

Which policy is best for me?

This portal does not compare or recommend products. Use the checklist to compare the wording against your actual trip, then ask a qualified insurance professional about suitability, exclusions, availability and price. No professional response or policy sale is available through this page.

Does travel insurance for Russia include repatriation?

The MFA guidance describes medical and transport services, including emergency repatriation, with financing under the insurance contract. Ask your insurer what evacuation and repatriation it actually covers, who arranges it in Russia, and which limits and exclusions apply. This guide does not certify a policy. Checked 13 October 2026. Official consular insurance guidance

What insurance document should I prepare for a Russian visa?

Ask the consulate receiving your application which policy or certificate it requires for your case. Ask the insurer to identify the insured travellers, Russia cover, dates and assistance contacts in the document. These are practical checks, not a universal certificate format or an acceptance guarantee.
